About this Center of Expertise

Executing Your Strategy Is When The Value Is Delivered

Executing strategy is also where most - up to 70% - of strategies fail. If you are not sure your strategy is going to deliver the desired results, or is even within you organization's capability to deliver, you need to assess this now.

If you're struggling to ensure your strategy is being implemented successfully, and in full, you need to take control and ensure the desired results are clear, achievable, prioritized and measured as delivered. These are the areas of focus for this Center of Expertise.

"A strategy consultancy presented their findings together with slides, charts and spreadsheets, detailing the benefits and resultant business value. The TOP Strategic Validation process identified there was one major problem—it was not practical. In practice the strategy could not be implemented."

This Center of Expertise provides the 'missing link' between the overall strategy and the project portfolio:
  • Ensures the strategy is absolutely clear - no misunderstandings
  • Ensures the strategy is feasible
  • Ensures the strategy will deliver the results expected
  • Translates the strategy into a Strategic Contribution Assessment Tool that can be used to measure each idea, initiative or project's strategic relevance on a consistent basis
  • Prioritizes the strategy so that the focus is on the highest value strategies from the outset
  • Enables continuous tracking and measuring of the strategy's execution allowing immediate remediation if problems arise.
The TOP tools are simple, work, and can ensure your strategy is both worthwhile and delivered.

Learning Outcomes

  • State your strategy in a series of clear, specific, measurable 'strategic outcome statements' that make it clear to all exactly what is planned. Too often strategies are vague and ambiguous and do not provide a clear direction to the organization.
  • Assess your proposed strategy — is it practical, feasible and achievable? You can cull unrealistic strategies before wasting any time on them.
  • Generate and implement a "Strategic Contribution Assessment Tool" (a SAT) that enables you to objectively measure and 'score' each project's strategic contribution. This simple but very powerful tool gives you total control over how your strategy is being executed.
  • Assess if your organization is capable of delivering your strategy. Hamel (Competing for the future) estimates that 40% of organizations are incapable of implementing their strategies. You need to know this as early as possible to avoid pursuing unrealizable goals.
  • Prioritize your strategy so that you know which strategies to pursue and in which order.
  • Convert your strategy into a series of projects and programs for implementation. This process ensures the link back to the relevant strategy is sustained so that your strategy's execution can be tracked.
  • Track and measure your strategy's execution and the results. Exactly how is your strategy being delivered? When will it be delivered? What level of results is being delivered? You need to know this month by month, not at the end of the year.
