The PPM is like a manager of a concert theatre
- You don’t determine the TOPology (the investment committee does) You don’t write the music (the business does)
- You don’t play the instruments (the project team does)
- You don’t benefit from the resultant music (the business does)
But you do control the sound system, the ambiance, the environment and, to some extent, the sequence of the TOPology. You also need to ensure the right types of musicians are available when needed and are to the quality required. You also need to control the various TOPologies to ensure they don’t overlap or duplicate, and so on. All while having none of the parties directly report to you. So what should you do, when, why and (importantly) how? TOP™ provides you with the understanding and guidance to enable you to be successful and be seen to add value to the project portfolio and the organization. It is not an easy role, but it is both critical and important. TOP™ takes you directly to Level 5 on the P3M3 maturity scale. Many of the PPM steps are included in the end-to-end process Guides as an integral part of each process’s successful delivery.
